What is Rehabilitation ?

Rehabilitation is a branch of medicine concerned with ensuring child/adult/elderly person is as independent as possible in their daily activities and can participate in work, leisure and meaningful life tasks. Everyone needs rehabilitation at some point in their life, whether it is after an injury, an operation, an illness or a decline in functioning capacity due to age.

What is the need for Rehabilitation centres ?

  • Estimated 2.4 billion people in the world live with a health condition that could benefit from rehabilitation.

  • The need for rehabilitation is expected to increase due to changes in the health status and characteristics of the population worldwide. For instance, people are living longer but with more chronic diseases and disabilities.

  • Currently, the need for rehabilitation is largely unmet. In some low and middle-income countries, more than 50% of people do not receive the rehabilitation services they need.

Rehabilitation is an important part of universal health coverage and is a key strategy for achieving Sustainable Development  –

“Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”

What do we do at the rehabilitation centre? ?

  • Speech and language training to improve communication after a brain injury

  • Physical activity training to improve muscle strength, voluntary movements and balance in people with stroke or Parkinson's disease

  • Modifying an older person's home environment to improve their safety and independence at home and reduce their risk of falls

  • Training people with heart disease how to exercise safely

  • Preparing a person with an amputation to use a prosthesis. Fitting and readjusting the prosthesis

  • Positioning and splinting techniques to help the skin heal, reduce swelling and regain mobility after burn surgery;

  • Prescribing medication to reduce spasticity in a child with cerebral palsy

  • Psychological therapies for a person with emotional problems after a spinal cord injury

  • Social skills training for a person with schizophrenia, autism spectrum disorders or intellectual disability disorders.

  • Training a person with visual impairment in the use of a white cane

  • Working with a patient in intensive care to improve their breathing, prevent complications and speed up their recovery after a serious illness

Where can a person be rehabilitated ?

Rehabilitation means that interventions are selected for each individual based on their goals and preferences. It is highly personalised and patient-centred. Rehabilitation can take place in many different places, e.g. inpatient or outpatient hospitals, outpatient physiotherapy or occupational therapy practises and in the community, e.g. at home, at school or at work.

Advantages of a rehabilitation centre

  • Rehabilitation centres alleviate the effects of a wide range of health conditions, including illness (acute or chronic), disease or injury, and help to facilitate recovery and achieve the best possible outcome. In addition, rehabilitation can help prevent, reduce or manage complications associated with many health conditions, such as those related to spinal cord injuries, strokes or fractures.

  • Rehabilitation helps minimise or slow the disabling effects of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes by providing people with self-management strategies and the tools they need or by treating pain or other complications. As such, it contributes to healthy ageing.

  • Rehabilitation is an investment that has cost benefits for both individuals and society. It can help avoid expensive hospitalisation, reduce the length of stay in hospital and prevent readmissions. As rehabilitation also enables individuals to start or return to work or remain independent at home, the need for financial or care support is minimised.
